Figuratively Speaking - Mediative Morning
![]() |
| 8"x10" watercolor $100 |
I kept waking up to check the clock because I had 2 granddaughters to get off to school. Of course, I then slept in. They had awoken in the middle of the night and came in to snuggle with me. I felt like my nest was full. It was a warm and wonderful feeling. I should state here that I loved it so much because I don't often get this opportunity. After rushing the dressing, eating, brushing teeth, hair fixing routines we went out on the cool morning to wait for the bus...which didn't come, and I realized I was half hour early. Geez it would take some practice to be good at this. That is pretty much true for anything I guess. My father always said, "Every parent is an amateur." That is so true. We are never ready for what the next twist and turn will bring. We only mellow out by the third kid! So now the sun is burning off the fog, the sky is blue and it promises to be an amazing day. I am free to do what I wish. That also is something I don't get the opportunity to do much. Rather, I have my routines. I guess I always have the choice, but I like feeling like my day is ordered. Today, however I am going to go by the seat of my pants. Maybe some new art gallery visits, maybe tracking down that wonderful watercolor artist, Jo Mackenzie (her gorgeous sunflower below) maybe taking a hike and practice some watercolors. Maybe I will do all of those things! Go Figure!

Figuratively Speaking - Patterns
Canvas boards are not the best surface to paint on. It is an inexpensive alternative to stretched canvas, canvas panels, linen surfaces or hardboard surfaces. I had some for my granddaughters to paint on, but I grabbed it to paint this image. What beautiful patterns there are in fabrics. Although I didn't copy the patterns as such, I tried to get the feel of the different fabrics and colors. We seek out patterns every day. They help us to understand what is going on around us and to find comfort in their regularity or excitement in their alterations. Visual patterns can be found in nature (spirals, fractals, waves, bubbles, cracks and all aspects of weather, water and light) as well as in art, like these beautiful fabrics. I don't focus on patterns so much, but they do add another dimension to painting. I often wear black or just plain boring clothing, but when I venture into something stylish, colorful or made of luscious patterns, my friends notice. They usually seem a bit surprised. I think I express my love of color through paint, and when it is time to get dressed my creativity is in storage....go figure!

Figuratively Speaking - Art as Communication
I saw a quote today in a post by Brain Pickings (an online newsletter that is the source of almost all my reading material) that so caught my attention, I decided to write my own blog post around the idea. Even though this was written about words, I think it totally applies to paintings which are just chemical colors on something flat, at the basic level, but come to life and create a magic at the hand of an artist. Ursula K. Le Guin put it best in contemplating the magic of real human communication: “Words are events, they do things, change things. They transform both speaker and hearer; they feed energy back and forth and amplify it. They feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it.”
A good painting does the same thing. It can be any style, any subject matter, but when someone is moved by it, it becomes a conversation.
I work at an artists' guild gallery a few days every month and I am always conscience that each person who comes in is seeking to interact with something. What is amazing, is that with all the diversity of types of objects and art, there is a different person to appreciate each and every piece. Frequently someone will fall in love with something that doesn't move me at all. I really like that because it reminds me that I am only one little (well, not so little) person with one little opinion. Even though there are others who would agree with that opinion, it really doesn't make it more valid or right. That is always a good lesson!

Pastoral Setting on Ocean Bluff
This was painted in June at Cape Cod. It was a wonderful trip and I am so happy that my friend Paula Hult was such an awesome host and painting buddy. Since then I have been really busy and will post some photos soon showing what I have accomplished.
