Figuratively Speaking - The View From My Studio

My first memory....stop me if I have already told this story....my first memory is a blur of moving colors.  Somehow that makes sense for a future artist.  I knew for a long time that this was my first memory, but I couldn't make any sense of it until I was an adult and was skiing.  I suddenly realized that the memory was tied to a real experience, that being the first time I went sledding.  If you have no point of reference for an experience, and no words to describe it, it sticks with you as a sensory image.  I think I will paint that memory...the way I remember it, as a blur of colors...Go Figure!

Figuratively Speaking - Waffles with Dad

It has been snowing.  The winter looks good so far.  The ski resorts are open and rocking.  Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters are spending money at the waffle cabin. Kids are out sledding.  The plowmen/women are making money.  Everyone who has gotten snowshoes for Christmas is getting to use them.  Those who are housebound for whatever reason are saying to themselves,"it's ok, it is too cold to be out so I'm glad to stay home by the fire."  It is going to get really cold, really soon, too.  We will have the opportunity to test our mettle and also the effectiveness of all those wool and high tech clothing we have collected.  It is invigorating and when the temps get above 20 degrees again we will feel like it is perfect!  If it sounds like I am an eternal optimist, well, it is because I am!  Go Figure!

This has a glare on the upper right, but it kind of emphasizes that it is a bright day and this guy is  skiing Ovation at Killington, whose slogan is Tame the Beast.  It is a 45 degree slope.

Another skier on slate.  The last week of the 30 day challenge is always the hardest for me because I am ready to move on to a different project.  However, I am having fun with these skiers.

I wish I was skiing, but am not yet able to venture that direction as I can barely walk around the grocery store!  However, there is always next year!

My friend Heather Shay and I painted slate the day before she took off for Costa Rica and then on to Guatemala.  I won't see her again until June because she lives an adventuresome life of the explorer. We had a great time.  I was feeling whimsical so I did the Easter Bunny skiing and she did Santa on skiis.  I am having fun...can you tell?

Day 6 - Killington Ski Resort

This photo makes the slate look really dark and the subtle colors are lost.  It is an image of Killington Ski Resort with a happy full moon overlooking it.  The moon was inspired by the talking moon from the BBC comedy The Mighty Boosh which is a very bizarre show created by two very talented guys.

Daddy Day

It is so fun to watch parents teach their little ones how to ski.  Kids pick it up so easily but it takes a lot of control and strength for the parent to ski down the mountain in this position.  Even though you can't see it, there are giant smiles on their faces!

A Good Day

It is cold enough for the brave to be out skiing today, but there are not a lot of trails open yet.  I love skiing.  It is invigorating, pushes me to my limits, and I think it is just breath taking to ride the lift up to the top of the mountain and see such grand vistas.  I have been wanting to do a series of ski paintings for a few years and I think I am finally ready to do it.

Book Illustration - Skiing with Grandpa

Skiing has started in our part of the country.  It is one of those things that make living in a snowy climate so appealing.  Actually it was snowing at my house this morning.  We have been having a very long and mild fall with incredible colors and we are due for the season of anoraks, tuques, mukluks  and shades of white.  One of the cool things about skiing with Grandpa is that there is sure to be a chocolate covered waffle from the Waffle Cabin thrown into the deal if mom and dad approve!  Kids around here start skiing from pack on dad's back and progress to little skis as soon as they can walk (there is debate about the safety of this method). The following photo was taken on Tuesday.
