Figuratively Speaking - Joy

We are empty nesters....have been for ages.  Almost every holiday we spend it with family, but this year is different.  This weekend we celebrated with my son's family and had a spectacular time with a bonfire, a spiral walk, and we decorated a night tree as well as exchanging gifts and eating great food.  Next weekend is my granddaughter's birthday so we will be with more family and friends.  I am saying this so you won't feel sorry for me when I say it will just be the two of us on Christmas day.  I have been thinking a lot about traditions and how important they are, but also how they need to be flexible so that we don't get disappointed when they are thwarted.  I don't think it is ever too late to start new traditions...times change and I want to change with them.  So, I have been trying to come up with the perfect tradition for Carl and I that can be adapted to those Christmas days when family is here or we are alone.  This year it looks like we are going to be housebound because a big storm is expected, so our new tradition has to be something we can do at home or if we are traveling elsewhere.  I am not there yet, but I am narrowing in on the perfect idea that will mark this Christmas as the one where we started a great new tradition.  I am taking suggestions, so please jump in and comment on my blog, or send me an email.  I hope your Christmas is everything you hope it will be.  I can't think of anything pithy to say to end this...so, Go Figure!

The Browns

This is a commission which took me forever to frame.  I don't know what I was thinking when I painted it in this diamond shape...sometimes doing something different backfires!  Anyway, I am happy with how it turned out and am hoping the Browns feel the same way.  They are such a beautiful family.  I added the suggestion of a white fence to help ground the diamond shape.  I think that works.

I am giving away this painting.  I really like it because it has all those ingredients that make it a lovely story with true romance!  A picnic in a meadow...a young couple....a kiss.....a baby in daddy's arms...what more can you ask for?  I got the idea from watching a production on Netflix.  It is a period piece with episodes and I am sure it is on TV as well although I don't have TV so I can't say for sure.  It is a popular show.  To win this painting, guess the name of the series.  If I get more than one correct guess, I will randomly choose a winner.  I have been thinking about doing this painting for a while and am so glad I finally got around to doing it.  I did it with a very limited palette (green, red, yellow, blue and white and kept it very loose so that I didn't overwork it.  You can register your guess by making a comment here, or on my facebook page. I just keep working on this one...it is getting better, but who knows...I may continue to mess with it....sometimes there is one I should have wiped....but instead I never let it go. Does this happen to you?

View from the Lake House oil 6"x6"

My parents retired to a home they built on a beautiful large lake.  This is a view of the end of the cove where they lived.  It was the place that we all came together to celebrate our family, to play to eat, to laugh and spend an inordinate amount of time waterlogged.  As my parents aged, they had to move, but we are filled with wonderful memories of being together there.
