Irene and the Old Mill #335 oil 6"x6"

I shot this photo during the hurricane..my camera was drenched after just a couple of shots and it was inside my raincoat! The river is not suppose to be banging up against the mill. The waves were as high as the second story balcony but fortunately, the mill held and so did the covered bridge near it. There was so much dirt being carried by the river that the air smelled like dirt and the normally crystal clear water was muddy brown. I am not sure it is powerful painting, but it was a powerful scene to witness. This river washed out some key roads in the area.

Thomas Travels to VT oil 6"x6" #334

I haven't painted for a few days because I have been distracted by hurricane Irene which blasted through VT with a vengeance. My son walked down from the ski area through the woods today because all the roads are washed out. I painted this commission because it was a cheerful subject and even though I have done it before, it was fun to do it a little differently, in oil, and a larger size.

The advantage of doing a painting a day is in the routine, the ability to really practice a particular skill or technique, the need to be decisive, do confident brush work, and explore color. The advantage of spending more time on a painting, or revisiting it, is that you can make some better decisions and revise it for an improved painting. This one I revisited after doing one in oil I really liked. I realized I didn't like the original background painting so I changed it to this Renoir and like it much more.

Embracing Monet's Sunset 8"x8" oil #331

I based this on a photo that I have already painted in acrylic on canvas, but I wanted to do one in oil on panel. I changed the background painting to Monet's "Sunset on the Seine at Lavacourt". He did a couple of these, in different seasons, as he did with many paintings. I liked the stripes on the woman's shirt and sweater and how the floor mimics the sunset. In the acrylic version all the colors were analogous which gave a whole different color harmony to the painting. I also did the acrylic with color washes.

This is something different. It is an oil cloth for a small table I have. When I became a grandma I decided I needed to cover my tables so they didn't get scuffed up. This table is the one we use for our tea parties so I made it fun and whimsical. I put 6 layers of gesso down, do the painting, then cover it with 4 layers of polyurethane. It is very labor intensive, but it makes a traditional oil cloth that will last forever and is really durable. Lisa Curry Mair makes her living making beautiful floor clothes for individuals and historic houses and museums. I learned how to do it from her book. Check out her website to learn more

I woke up wanting to paint. Yeah! It has been a while since I didn't have to push myself. This is for a DPW Challenge. There is a bit of glare on the photo and the blue shadow is not so blue on the painting.

Thomas Visits Elia acrylic 4"x4" #323

I have been sick all week and finally am feeling a bit better. I didn't have time to go shopping for a four year old who is close to the family so I decided to paint him a picture of his favorite subject. Did you know that there is a real Thomas the Train that comes to a station near you? There is and he is visiting our area later this month. The engineer is waving at the birthday boy, Elia (EELEE_u). It is good to be back.

Values 4"x4" acrylic #322

This was a Dailypaintworks challenge. The one on the top is the photo (which I cropped to a square format) that I painted from. The next image is a black and white photo of my painting to check values. I turned my painting into B&W in photoshop. The bottom is the color painting I did. I think it is pretty good. I made the crystal weight on the blinds a bit larger but the values seem fairly accurate I think.
