Tess 18x18" oil

Finally, after much struggle,I finished this portrait of Tess. In the process I learned a lot about the subtleties of dog head structure and how to paint from several varying photographic references to gain a better understanding of the shape and values needed. Tess is very hyperactive so getting a good photo of her was next to impossible. I hope I have captured a bit of her energy too.

  1. Her energy is there. Looks as though she ready to give a bark or chase a ball.
Her head "reads" really well to me. Those multiple photo references paid off.

  2. I like the pose also. My son's labs never stops moving and I can only imagine how hard it was to get pictures. I really like the background color choice.

  3. I think this turned out exceptionally well. If you ever become frustrated with a painting, have me do a copy first and then you will suddenly feel much better about your amazing work! :) I love following your work on the internet... keep posting!
